They successfully used the sheath in combination with the safeperiod during this 3-year period. Presumably abstinence, coitus interruptus, safeperiod and undisclosed use of other methods make a significant contribution to total contraceptive practice. One patient had been using the safeperiod and one had been using no method. Unlike us, they found reporting of the safeperiod more consistent than reporting of withdrawal. The safeperiod was the most popular of the traditional methods, especially in the 25-29 age group. In three cases, failure had occurred through the combined use of the safeperiod and withdrawal! One patient became pregnant with an intrauterine device in situ, one while using a diaphragm and two had been using the safeperiod. The safeperiod is observed, but this is notoriously unsafe, particularly so in the girl with an irregular cycle. Seventeen women (4%) relied on withdrawal or the safeperiod and only five women (1 %) took no precautions. Among the traditional methods, the safeperiod is the most popular (17%). Of the 33 who prescribed one method only, 26 were for the pill and 7 for the safeperiod. A greater proportion of people began to marry and at younger ages as well; these young couples demanded more reliable methods of family planning than the safeperiod. The most enthusiastic experimenters were users of the safeperiod and those using minor methods, with diaphragm users and couples using withdrawal occupying an intermediate position.
