These changes are seen clinically as a thinning of the vaginal walls and loss of rugae. The inner layer of the gall bladder is not smooth, but, like the stomach, contains minute rugae. The series of elevations in the hard palate are called palatine rugae and are useful for food positioning. Loss of rugae, thinning, and loss of elasticity are the common atrophic changes in the vaginal mucosa of ageing women.
