释义 | boll noun[ C ] uk /bəʊl/ us /boʊl/ the part of the cotton plant that contains the seeds棉籽 Fruits & seeds & their parts ackee aronia barberry bergamot bur caryopsis chaff cone flesh peel peelings pip pith pithy poppy seed radicle radicular seed coat seed pod seedless As the blossoms die they are replaced by the young bolls, or pods, which contain the seeds. At first cotton-picking was interesting, the fluffy bolls looking like artificial roses and the stray blossoms strangely shaped and delicately pink. In the autumn you see the pod or boll which contains the cotton. The bolls are placed on racks, and are sun-dried, after which the husks are removed by hand. The top of the cotton stalk glimmered with a purple bloom, but down between the rows, among the dying leaves, the first bolls were opening. Examples of bollboll In this investigation, quantification of fibre quality in individual bolls revealed wide variations in fibre maturity. One must remember, however, that the green bolls were of large size and that a large proportion of them must have been approaching maturity. This comparison focused on the phenological cycle of cotton plants, especially the flowering stages: fruiting onset and effective flowering time (period when bolls are initiated). There was no significant positionrcultivar interaction, thus, mote frequencies between bolls at different plant positions were not affected by cultivars. Ten bolls were harvested for each plant position. Source-sink relations as affected by water stress during boll development. A further important fact is that a diet of unopened bolls leads, in general, to a high mortality with prolongation of the stadia. Of the three yield components (boll number, boll weight and lint percentage), boll number was the most sensitive to shade. Total bolls per plant were also measured immediately prior to harvest. High levels of late season cotton aphid infestation can cause aphid honeydew accumulation on open bolls, resulting in sticky cotton lint. The decrease in lint yield for shaded cotton was mainly associated with a decrease in the number of retained bolls. Bolls at the middle and top parts of the plant had lower mote frequencies than bolls at the bottom of the plant. The fruiting site of a boll represents a unique microsite with individual combinations of temperatures, light and metabolic resource allocations. However, the final effect of treatment on the number of bolls per plant was not significant in either year. Not until the fourth instar was reached did nymphs thrive satisfactorily upon unopened bolls. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
