To make these levels clear they take over from philosophical literature a distinction between three kinds of relativism: ontological, epistemological and moral. While the authors do not agree on the valuation of ontological relativism, they warmly welcome epistemological as well as moral relativism. Such an approach, however, lends as little support to a romantic critique of science in practical respect as to an epistemological relativism in theoretical respect. The exclusive cultural approach advocated by ethical relativism closes each community in on itself. The merits of relativism, however, must be weighed against the trap of exceptionalism. Virtually all schools of anthropology entail an acceptance of at least a weak form of descriptive relativism. Relativism counsels tolerance, it is believed, whereas nonrelativism engenders accusations of irrationality or willful malice and a dogmatic attachment to one's own cultural prejudices. Though some cultural relativism is necessary, undoubtedly people develop cultural biases based on their exposure as children. This bolder version of ethical relativism holds that an action is right if and only if it accords with the norms of the agent's group. For me there seems to be little more than this: relativism, properly applied, is a good thing which archaeologist shouldn't undervalue. These last points bring us back to the issue of the separation of epistemological and moral relativism. Aside from the ubiquitous undergraduate examples, relativism is often invoked to address cross-cultural systems of belief. Many philosophers assume that some bedrock foundation or a priori method is necessary to avoid relativism. Instead of identifying conflicting belief systems by introducing her inclusive relativism, she should now rather draw the lines of battle. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
