These include commercial maize production, horticulture, tree crops, dairy, and cattle ranching. This problem is compounded by the presence, within the ranch, of patches of thicket harbouring untreated populations of tsetse. Developments in the post-colonial period, including the emergence and decline of group ranches are discussed after this. In addition to wild herbivores, the ranch also houses domestic stock, of which there are approximately 3000 cattle and 500 sheep, goats, camels, and donkeys. Where ranching predominates, wetlands provide choice dry-season pastures; corrals and milking sheds often perch on the islands. This part in essence retains the group ranch system. They are labeled as 'costs' due to the prevailing notion that ranching leads to negative environmental impacts. Logging generally is the initial mode of land development, followed by land clearing, cropping, and cattle ranching. But the development of individual ranches raised several concerns. In-terms of vegetation, 80 per cent of the district can be classified as low savanna and arid/semi-arid (ranching zones). The important question is whether the whole ranch system is resilient in the face of a simultaneous drought and a change in the market. The first is to continue with the present group ranch system. The diversity is staggering: types of vegetation and associated management practices which range from commercial ranches to traditional transhumance and nomadic systems.
