Occasionally it contains pods (greater than 1 cm) of black sandstone enriched in carbon and pyrite. Some samples contain trace amounts of pyrite and chalcopyrite. The palynomorphs are, in general, poorly preserved, moderately carbonized, brown to dark brown, and often pyrite-impregnated. The inlays of the lateral incisors are of greenstone, while those of the canines are of pyrite. Only bed 31g yielded pyrite framboids in this section. However, pyrite framboid data indicate variation in the intensity of oxygen restriction. Studies of ancient sediments reveal pyrite framboid analyses can additionally provide a subtle indicator of environmental stability. Yet when the average speaker employs "gold," he or she refers to gold and not (also) to iron pyrite. Analysis of anions leached from rock samples suggests that subsurface pyrite weathering is centered at two zones within the ore body. It is based on the idea that the amount of pyrite formed in the sediment depends on the availability of iron (and/or organic carbon). Most are flattened; the remainder are preserved in three dimensions, but have suffered from 'pyrite disease' (decomposition). The sulphide phase involves the precipitation of both fine-grained and coarsely crystalline sulphides (chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrite) with quartz, dolomite, calcite, malachite and pink baryte. Accessory phenocrysts include untwinned albite of < 8 %, magnetite < 4 % and zircon in trace, as well as replacement pyrite of < 12 % and chalcopyrite in trace.
