The advances of medical science were slow to alleviate diseases associated with childbirth, such as puerperal fever. The doctor and his colleagues said it was puerperal fever, which (in those days) in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred ended fatally. She died at her home in Greenhithe, aged twenty-eight, of puerperal fever in 1865, eight days after the birth of her son. Prior to this time, puerperal fever was the commonest cause of maternal mortality, accounting for over 40% of maternal deaths.
