The doctor and his colleagues said it was puerperal fever, which (in those days) in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred ended fatally. She died at her home in Greenhithe, aged twenty-eight, of puerperal fever in 1865, eight days after the birth of her son. Prior to this time, puerperal fever was the commonest cause of maternal mortality, accounting for over 40% of maternal deaths.
