The two cells on the left are a similar size and are both in metaphase, whereas those on the right have just reached prophase. This stage corresponded to prophase of the first mitosis. Prophase of these divisions was characterised by an irregular arrangement of microtubules in the nuclear area. This is partially because of oocyte degeneration in the meiotic prophase and partly due to intense multiplication of ovary somatic cells. When it is arrested in the meiotic prophase, the assembly of diplotene oocyte and pregranulosa cells occur. This suggests that granulosa cells maintained the oocytes at the prophase of the first meiosis. It looks as though there is an intact nucleus and the cells are considered to be in prophase of early embryonic divisions. The pregranulosa cells migrate through the connective tissue fibrils of the stroma and arrive at the vicinity of the meiotic prophase oocytes. In the mouse, as in most vertebrates, ovarian oocytes arrest at the diplotene stage of the first meiotic prophase until puberty. Around 11-12 weeks of gestation, the germ cells situated innermost in the cortex, enter prophase of the first meiotic division. Pairing behaviour during male meiotic prophase indicates that these autosomes are homologues. This maturation is later blocked during the early stages of prophase. During assembly of follicles the oocytes increase in size and enter the meiotic prophase when the number of nucleoli in the nucleus increases. This suggests that most irregular cells are likely to arrest at prophase/prometaphase, whereas those with less severe defects may be able to proceed to anaphase.
