a piece of tissue inside the knee joint that helps keeps it firmly fixed, and connects the femur(= upper leg bone) to the tibia(= lower leg bone), helping to prevent the tibia from moving too far backwards:
The anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments are intraarticular ligaments, and contribute to the stability of the knee.
An injury to the posterior cruciate ligament in sports is uncommon, but can be devastating.
