a form of plague(= a very infectious and dangerous disease caused by bacteria) that is spread through the air, and that mainly affects the lungs and usually causes death in humans:
Pneumonic plague can be fatal in up to 90% of people infected if not treated.
The most severe form of the disease is pneumonic plague, which invades the lungs and can be passed easily by a sneeze or a cough.
Pneumonic plague results from inhalation of infected droplets, leading to haemorrhagic consolidation and sepsis.
Antibiotic therapy can cure it if started early, but once symptoms appear, many people with pneumonic plague die, even with antibiotics.
The incubation period for pneumonic plague is typically 2 to 4 days.
