One of the 6 untreated control pheasants contained 1 adult worm. The causes of death of radiotagged pheasants are shown in table 1, most cases being attributed to foxes. Active pheasant management took place on all estates. In the present study, no apparent relationship between parasite burdens and survival or cause of death of the pheasants was found. Three pheasants appeared dead without signs of predation, almost emaciated and with signs of severe enteritis. Twelve game-farm adult pheasants, maintained in pens on concrete and previously treated with flubendezole, were used. The experimental release of 56 radiotagged pheasants showed that 98% of birds died within 12 days. Acting simultaneously, the result would be a reduction in worm burden in the pheasant, as observed in the pilot study. The breeding success of pheasants was significantly higher on plots provided with anthelmintic treatment, although no long-term increases in population densities were observed. We hypothesize that: (i) pheasant releases may have low effectiveness; and (ii) parasitized pheasants will survive less than non-parasitized ones. All pheasants were acquired from the main breeding facility in the region, placed 15 km away from the release site. Areas preferred by pheasants and past congregation points, such as feed rides, woodland edge or near release pens were criteria for siting these experimental pens. Seedlings were screened from pheasant predation by wire mesh (4 cm diameter) which was removed after 10-15 days. Radio-tagged pheasants were measured and a faecal sample was obtained from each one the day before their release. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
