Arm in arm, the animal protesters broke down the palisades and forced open the cages, releasing those who had been born in captivity and were ignorant of freedom. He reported having observed that those elements consisted of a fully transparent, strongly refracting substance, and that they were shaped like palisades and had smooth surfaces. A clear difference in the formation of the layer 6 palisades, coincident with the deepest recordings made in the middle medial bank of the suprasylvian sulcus, was observed. Also, the shade plants tended to have 1-2 cell layers in the palisade mesophyll compared with 2-3 layers in sun plants. The palisade parenchyma is interpreted as a barrier to desiccation of the acorn and may have a photosynthetic function during the formation of the fruit. The palisade cells also show adaptations for gaseous exchange. Hatching occurs within 7-12 days through the egg side in contact with the leaf surface, and neonates initiate the feeding on the palisade parenchyma. After shedding, the parenchymal cells become lignified and die, but the structure of both cuticle and palisade cells is retained. We reduced variability by eliminating from the study cells of the two protoderm layers, the provascular regions and the palisade ground meristem. The number of palisade mesophyll cell layers was 2-3 in shade plants, while for sun plants it was 3-4. The palisade parenchyma and thick cuticle thus appear to form the two main structural barriers to desiccation. Thus, the seed does not imbibe water or germinate until the integrity of the endocarp, which contains an outer layer of palisade cells, is disrupted. Below the upper epidermis is the palisade mesophyll, which is the most important photosynthetic tissue of the plant. They were twice repelled, but the third time they stormed the palisades.
