either of two structures on the surface of the brain of an embryo (= a baby before it is born) that develops into an optic cup, and later into part of the eye:
The eyes first appear as a pair of optic vesicles.
By four weeks, major regions of the human brain can be recognized, including the forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain, and optic vesicles from which the eyes develop.
The embryos showed a well-developed optic calyx, crystalline lens and optic vesicle.
