The oilpalm plantation has become the largest sector in terms of area after it surpassed the rubber plantation sector in 1997. The forest remnants are surrounded by plantations of oilpalm. Oilpalm producers were not the only farmers affected by the colonial government's low pricing policy. The occurrence of gaps, the overlap between neighbouring palm crowns and the moment of canopy closure, also aect light interception of oilpalm canopies. The oilpalm plantation beetles were, however, distinctly different from the rest of the sites. It can lead to oilpalm cultivation being abandoned in certain zones. In the situation where oilpalm is an option, following logging, the returns per hectare of forest converted are much superior to subsidized eco-forestry. This is not surprising because the oilpalm leaves that protrude from the solitary stem provide much shade to the base of the tree. A linear relationship determined from measurements on leaves in two- to six-year-old oilpalm plantings served this purpose. So far little attention has been paid to the number of green leaves per palm in oilpalm research. There were more understorey beetles in the acacia plantation, which has more ground cover, compared with the oilpalm plantation (see figs 4 and 8b). Confronted by this reality, the colonial authorities accepted that the oilpalm produce industry could not survive without the introduction of a plantation system. Attempts to establish oilpalm plantations to facilitate changes in the nature of palm oil production, particularly for export, were unsuccessful. They believed that experimental plantations should have been introduced to teach local oilpalm producers the benefits of the system. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
