Nerves have been traced to the odontoblast layer at the base of the dentine. The pulp consists of a fine network of reticular tissue, together with the peripheral layer of odontoblasts. Odontoblasts have a relation to the development of the teeth similar to that of the osteoblasts to the formation of bone. The dental papilla contains cells that develop into odontoblasts, which are dentine-forming cells.
