The exposed areas are called nodes of Ranvier and they contain very high densities of sodium channels. Neurofibrillar degeneration occurs for a minimum of two to three nodes of Ranvier proximal to the point of injury. The small, uncovered areas of axon between Schwann cells are called nodes of Ranvier. When nerve fibres are cut across, the central ends of the fibres degenerate as far as the first node of Ranvier.
