Rabbits were examined for lesions indicative of active myxomatosis. Rabbits infected with viruses from the third group generally did not show serious clinical signs of disease and only one rabbit died of myxomatosis. Rather than eradicating the comparatively few survivors of myxomatosis, a rabbit population was allowed to reestablish itself. This has implications for the reliability of surveys that rely on anecdotal reports of the prevalence of clinical myxomatosis. The initial spread of the virus to non-inoculated rabbits was first indicated by the appearance of myxomatosis in noninoculated rabbits living in the release warrens. In each group there were rabbits that did not show any clinical signs of myxomatosis. Eight of ten rabbits in this group developed clinical signs of myxomatosis and these developed high levels of antibody by day 18. Rabbits affected by myxomatosis were excluded from growth-curve fitting, since this disease causes loss of body condition. Two inoculated rabbits did not show definite clinical signs and despite being housed with seven rabbits with severe myxomatosis did not develop disease. These trials confirmed that resistance to myxomatosis within wild rabbit populations continues to be substantial and that some rabbits are highly resistant. The numbers indicate the order of discovery of cases of myxomatosis from which the released virus was obtained. The observation that only a small proportion of rabbits were seen with myxomatosis despite the serological evidence that most became infected was interesting. Rabbits on these sites had presumably experienced an epizootic of myxomatosis in the previous year. The 57 infected rabbits represented 20.7 % of the 275 rabbits sampled from sites where myxomatosis was found. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
