In the elderly, inclusion body myositis is the commonest acquired myopathy. However, alcohol can certainly cause an acute myopathy. Although the latter is perhaps not strictly speaking a myopathy, it will be considered here. Proteins whose genes are mutated in myofibrillar myopathies are shown in red. The myopathy of primary hyperthyroidism responds to removal of the adenoma. In the elderly, inclusion body myositis is the commonest acquired myopathy; its aetiology remains uncertain.
