At the same time, this new writing on opera has been influential in making questions of representation, voice and power central to musicology generally. The fact that it presents itself in such a fashion is an indictment of the gestural rather than critical orientation of political discourse within musicology. He was the first scholar to transfer the strict standards of philology to musicology. A methodological problem for musicology is, in fact, the question of how to handle such paradoxically interpretative capabilities.
