Phonemes with context sensitive spellings are misspelled more often than phonemes with entirely consistent spellings, but not as often as phonemes with word-specific spellings. For research purposes, we correct misspelled words by hand. The optimum spelling-checker reports a 'miss' if and only if the word is actually misspelled. And yet the calligraphic words are often misspelled. Thus, as already discussed, we do not consider the context in which a word (valid or misspelled) occurs in since spelling checkers have no contextual knowledge. Repeatedly encountering misspelled names, missing end notes, and egregious grammatical and punctuation errors distracts from the reader's ability to focus on the substantive contributions of this work. Short as it is, the brief biographical sketch of the author that appears at the end of the book manages to misspell his name in the second paragraph. Cross-references are to wrong pages; a line has dropped out at a page turn (23-24), but in compensation another is repeated (123-24); and some ordinary words are misspelled. Similarly, society names were also misspelt. Gutman's (sic) name is consistently misspelled.
