Effective methods for decontaminating whole and cut melons have not been identified. We reviewed processes contributing to cantaloupe contamination, conditions affecting survival and growth of bacterial pathogens on melons, and potential methods for sanitization. Most commonly potatoes, sometimes carrots, beetroots, onions, garlic and marrows were cultivated in the allotments, and in the south melons and watermelons. However, melon accessions differ in their ability to germinate at low temperatures. Although the aim of post-harvest washing is largely to remove soil and clean the melons, it may also contribute to contamination. These observations point out the need to discard the entire melon when only a small area shows visual decay. The cropping pattern, mainly wheat, barley, and sugar beets, had changed little over the previous decades, except that the cultivation of melons had increased considerably. Two additional melon huts and a small, galvanised iron 'garden shed' were added later. After receiving reports of poor whitefly control on imidacloprid-treated melons, whitefly samples were shipped to our laboratory for evaluation. Treatment of melon flesh with food-safe sanitizers also does not eliminate bacteria. Generation means analysis of plant architectural traits and fruit yield in melon. Bacteriophages, gamma irradiation, and ultraviolet light treatment are possible alternatives to sanitizing melons but have not been sufficiently evaluated for their efficacy.
