According to studies, the average wage of maquila workers is lower now than it was in 2003. The upward trend in maquiladora-exports offset the inability of the rest of the local manufacturing sector to adjust and hence take advantage of the new conditions. The location of industrial complexes integrated by large high-tech exportoriented automotive and electronics maquiladoras and their numerous suppliers, reveals a preference for north and central-north states. This may be supported in part by maquiladora income since the young members of the family consistently give the head of the household a portion of their maquiladora earnings.
