释义 | madrigal noun[ C ] uk /ˈmæd.rɪ.ɡəl/ us /ˈmæd.rə.ɡəl/ a song, developed in Italy in the 14th century, that is performed without musical instruments and in which several singers sing different notes at the same time无伴奏合唱曲 Singing a cappella accompaniment accompany alto anthem coloratura contralto countertenor croon crooner dirge intonation prima donna psalm quartet quintet raise the roofidiom singsong the Internationale warble Examples of madrigalmadrigal The two madrigals were written 18 months apart as separate manuscripts, so that groups who perform them together have chosen the order which suits them. The book is larger than the average madrigal collection, containing twenty-four pieces in total: ten enigmas, four madrigals and ten dialogues. At the same time, the madrigal could also incorporate elements of the unwritten tradition. As for the lute, its versatility as a contrapuntal instrument allowed it to accompany both improvised song and solo madrigals. It should come as no surprise to find madrigals and motets in the same source, albeit destined for private entertainment. The language of the villanesca is quite different from the norm in lyrical genres and the madrigal repertoire. It is hardly conceivable that the five madrigals of the cycle were composed at different periods, especially since madrigal cycles became popular in the 1540s. This is actually the only instance, albeit repeated, of a full authentic close in the whole madrigal. I have deliberately chosen a text with forms of pseudo-communication that recur, but probably do not predominate in the madrigal repertoire. One telltale pointer is the presentation of the same madrigals the same order in earlier sources. At wedding parties, the usual musical gift was a madrigal or villanella. Nuptial madrigals were printed as a set of single leaves, one for each voice-part. There are also a few examples of poetic texts not organised into triplets, and lacking the ritornello, that are set to music as madrigals. However oblique the harmony, it is plainer than is the case with the madrigals. Musically, the madrigals avoided blatant archaisms, but their texts were imbued with them.
