We postulated that the current voluntary reporting system considerably underestimates the number of listeriosis cases. Following an improvement in local food production conditions, the number of culture-confirmed cases of listeriosis fell to only two in 1998. We performed a nationwide surveillance study of listeriosis. The epidemiology of listeriosis is only partially understood particularly in countries where the disease is not notifiable. This approach may be especially valuable for diseases such as listeriosis where well but susceptible controls can be difficult to enrol. Listeriosis is a food-associated disease.
