Eighty-nine little books, or libretti, produced for these semi-staged concerts over a 150-year period, have survived. A chronological examination of die libretti demonstrates, however, a gradual demand for realism to the extent that writing and decor became more equally weighted. His libretti are less literature than they are scripts. Unfortunately no libretti were printed for either show, and no cast information has turned up. This information is based on libretti published at the time of the ballets' and operas' premieres. Nonetheless, the libretti provide invaluable information about the various woven or braided patterns combined with the round dances. A total of twenty-six libretti are extant; there were also at least another five productions for which no libretto survives. Indeed, he had made room for such scenes in his own ballet libretti and created parts for male dancers. The libretti opted instead for the neologism 'ballet bouffon'. For it turns out that the libretti themselves provide usable choreographic information - not just about styles of dancing, but even about specific movements.
