These tumours make growth hormone, which can cause acromegaly or gigantism when too much is made. Acromegaly is nearly always caused by a pituitary adenoma. Patients with untreated or persistent acromegaly tend to have premature cardiovascular disease. All patients had typical clinical features of the acromegaly syndrome.
