They are found in humans and many animals, but are especially well developed in snakes and lizards: The snake tastes scent particles from the air using a special membrane, called Jacobson's organ, at the back of its mouth. The Jacobson organ is found at the base the snake's nasal cavity and has two ducts that reach down to the roof of the snake’s mouth. The male curls his lip to lodge the scent of the female's urine in a particularly sensitive part of his nasal cavity, the Jacobson's organ, so that he can assess the female's reproductive condition. Many New World monkeys still make use of the Jacobson's organ and have a keen sense of smell.
