词汇 | interfix |
释义 | interfix noun[ C ] uk /ˈɪn.tə.fɪks/ us /ˈɪn.t̬ɚ.fɪks/ language specialized an infix(= a letter or group of letters added in the middle of a word to make a new word) that does not in itself have any meaning: An example of an interfix is the "-ad" of Spanish "panadero" (baker), composed of "pan" (bread) + "-ad" + "-ero" (agentive suffix). There is also a variant of "thingamabob" without the interfix "-ma-" but rather with -y: "thingybob". Compare affix infix prefix suffix Dutch compounds often contain interfixes, e. g. "-s-" and "-en-" in schaap+s+hond (sheepdog) and schaap+en+kaas (sheep cheese). I think the -y in greeny-grey is better regarded as a type of interfix rather than an infix, simply because infixes must have a distinct paraphrasable meaning. The term interfix was first coined by the University of California's Yakov Malkiel for an infix devoid of meaning.
