in American football, an occasion when the quarterback throws the ball to a place where no player can catch it, in order to avoid being tackled(= made to fall to the ground) and losing yards, which is against the rules and results in a penalty :
The quarterback was called for intentional grounding, and his team was penalized ten yards.
If intentional grounding occurs when a quarterback is in his team's own end zone, the defence is awarded a safety.
The referee called intentional grounding because no player was within five yards of the spot where the pass landed.
