Granivores were even able to locate seeds from which dung beetles had removed the surrounding faeces. We found an increase in the number of fruits produced when inflorescences were visited by more than one beetle. Attention has focused almost exclusively on adult beetles, probably because their larvae are conspicuously missing from tropical foliage. However, the present authors tentatively conclude that diving beetles may emigrate due to density-dependent effects when their populations reach certain but unknown threshold levels. The availability of alternative prey may have affected the quantities of slug consumed, but clearly did not prevent the beetles from reducing slug populations. Marked similarities are reported between complexes of the natural enemies associated with bark beetles in different parts of the world. The parasitoids rapidly became firmly established and snout beetle populations declined dramatically. The bait areas were large enough for all beetles to occur simultaneously. Fewer beetles attacked infested trees in subsequent years. This served the purpose of identification as well as to approximate the handling given to treatment beetles during ablation of appendages. The use of relatively small baits ensured that competition would have occurred even at low beetle densities. Consider, for example, the bombardier beetle's extraordinary system of defence. The occupancy-abundance relationships established here can be used as guide to estimate beetle densities for decision-making. In the present study, there were several willow stands with relatively low densities of both heteropteran predators and leaf beetles.
