Humidity in vials was measured daily using a hand-held digital hygrometer. The conditions inside the cabinet were monitored digitally by means of thermometer and hygrometer which were calibrated before the study. The relative humidity was monitored throughout the experiment using hair hygrometers and was consistently 100% (high) and 68% (low). In the field an egg-whisk wet and dry bulb hygrometer was used, where it could be inserted. The weighing hygrometer has one great disadvantage : it becomes misleading if it is exposed to dust. Very few humidity records were taken, as the only available whirling hygrometer was broken by an assistant early in the period. A calibration curve may be obtained by plotting the weights of the paper hygrometer after exposure to air of various humidities. During weighing, which takes 10 seconds, the hygrometer hangs freely in the air. The hair hygrograph was inaccurate, but the graph was corrected from whirling hygrometer readings five times a day. There was a significant negative correlation between fly and relative humidity, measured with a wet and dry bulb hygrometer in a screen in the open. If the hygrometers are always kept under definite conditions, no error will be made, as all estimations will be comparable. The hygrometer itself is extremely simple. Paper acts in the same way, and a weighing hygrometer made of paper has been devised. We also seek power to prescribe for the provision of thermometers and hygrometers in appropriate circumstances.
