The earliest residents were herdsmen, karamokobe and traders, and people holding those three occupations shaped subsequent community growth and interactions with local populations. The herdsmen call it ' marmot sickness ' after the rodents that are chiefly responsible for carrying the disease. Among those using husks for boiler fuel, 11 allowed local herdsmen to remove the excess as a feed supplement for their cattle. At a number of ginneries, herdsmen were allowed to remove seed husks that accumulate at the ginneries as a byproduct of oil extraction. Remunerations for herdsmen consist mainly of the animal's milk, manure and the use of farmlands around the compound. They also insist that such destruction is not due to foul play or mischief on the part of the herdsmen. Consequently, rules concerning time and spatial distribution of millet cultivation were less exact and depended predominantly on the co-ordination achieved by groups of herdsmen. One could argue that due to increasing pressure on the natural resource base, mutual interests between herdsmen and farmers have increased. However, we argue that these findings give reason to seriously question the ' mainstream ' interpretation of conflicts between herdsmen and farmers. Accessing grazing and farmlands by herdsmen has become more difficult and is often accompanied by bureaucratic hurdles. However, most of these herdsmen are reported to have come to the country originally as traders, middlemen and porters. Thereafter, livestock seized from the herdsmen was quarantined and their owners compelled to pay for the cost incurred. The herdsmen collectively use the group tenure pasture and their houses are usually set up near each other for security and mutual aid. This policy was however difficult to enforce and the extent of compliance by individual herdsman could not easily be verified. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
