Though these changes affected rural areas less dramatically, farmers and herders also sought alternate sources of capital, security and distribution. Increasing colonial presence disrupted the seasonal mobility of indigenous hunters and herders. In total 39 per cent of all herders have undertaken at least one landimproving investment. Older herders are expected to be less likely to migrate than their younger counterparts. Our study tests this and uses the results to draw policy conclusions for improving the welfare of herders. The inability to resolve herder-farmer conflicts has resulted in frequent mass movement of cattle across the borders. Such a policy may adversely affect herders with large herds and should therefore to be considered in the light of its benefits and costs. Lack of water is expected to be one of the major factors forcing the herder to move. Second, such pressure forces the herders to move out in search of more pasture and water. Those who continue to remain faithful in repayment are considered trustworthy and are appointed herders. From the regression results, we obtain the predicted probability that the herder migrates with livestock. Cooperation between different neighborhoods took the form of granting grazing access to herders who were temporarily passing through the area. All education dummies have positive and significant coefficients, indicating that more educated herders report higher productivity than their less educated counterparts. Furthermore, about 26 per cent of all herders own no cattle at all, but have small stock (sheep and goats). These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
