At approximately four weeks after fixation, haversian canals proliferate along the longitudinal axis of the bone. A Haversian canal often contains two vessels, an artery and a vein, together with a small amount of connective tissue. The Haversian canals also send out smaller lateral vessels to provide nutrition to the nether regions of the bone. Each Haversian canal communicates either directly or indirectly with the marrow cavity of the bone.
