Agreement

Noun phrases can show person (first, second or third) and number (singular or plural). The person and number of the noun phrase which is the subject of a clause decides the person and number of the verb. This is called agreement.

Where there is more than one subject joined by and, the verb is plural:

Gerry and his brother are coming to stay next week.
