The glossopharyngeal nerve mediates taste on the posterior one-third of the tongue. Some bitter compounds preferentially stimulate the glossopharyngeals. In the tongue, the taste buds are innervated by the chorda tympani and the glossopharyngeal nerve. The glossopharyngeal nerve functions in taste, swallowing, and salivation.
