If God's foreknowledge be certain, it seems to exclude the possibility of man's free will. The Archbishop paused for a moment, thinking how best to avoid any appearance of foreknowledge. They had foreknowledge of danger long before horses or human beings could suspect it. Two or three look sick with foreknowledge of what they have to witness. Examples of foreknowledgeforeknowledge This is not to say that there are no problems with affirming divine foreknowledge. This theory does, in certain respects, afford advantages for divine control as opposed to both free-will theism and simple foreknowledge. Each problem concerns an apparently apodeictic principle that the providential employment of divine foreknowledge is supposed to violate. And without the experience of willing, even this foreknowledge of the action seems insufficient to move the action into the "consciously willed" category. And so to return to the problem of freedom and foreknowledge. Living organisms, however, are not the only systems that benefit from foreknowledge. Unfortunately, they do not indicate what exactly was known, and how partly, in order to explain why the foreknowledge does not partly weaken their argument. All it seems to take is the appropriate foreknowledge of the action. In addressing these issues, it will be helpful to examine the views of some recent theistic writers who deny divine foreknowledge. Even so, that foreknowledge should not be seen as in any sense the cause of that which is foreknown. In contrast, in the foreknowledge formulation the leader is assumed to know precisely the random variable generated by the process. And yet the results of intervention of a certain kind are predictably bad, as they endanger a better future of which we have foreknowledge. Free-will theists cannot deny this, but neither can the adherents of simple foreknowledge deny it. Of course, this presumes that the foreknowledge is correct, or at worst a good approximation! Our foreknowledge that this illusion is the result of a technical operation - a prior surgery, so to speak - only serves to strengthen the total effect.
