Breathe slowly and deeply, and feel the floating ribs expand and contract as you breathe in and out. The top seven ribs connect to the breast bone, the next three connect to the rib directly above them, and there are two floating ribs. The floating ribs, ribs 11-12, have no anterior attachment with the sternum. Floating ribs are a physical characteristic present in all dogs.
