During the performance the flautist triggers the pre-recorded material and real-time reverberation by a switch pedal at strictly notated places. My interpretations of flautists' embodied identities are thus always imbued with my embodied experiences as a flautist/scholar/listener. The flautists thus defined and redefined the overlapping structures of sameness and selfhood in terms of occurrence, altered spatialities and control. This article examines the live flautist's embodied identity during the real-time reverberation and the pre-recorded part. The flautist makes fleshy vibratos, almost brutal screams and double-tongued speech acts. The article investigates experiences of control and identity through interviews with both flautists and sound technicians. She also pays attention to the actual experiences of different flautists. The flautist can control the timing and the force of the reverberation, but cannot define the final balance construction of the sound. Every single playing mechanism becomes spatialised far beyond the flautist's intimate control level, that is, at the sound director's desk. For me as a flautist, personally, it is impossible to listen to flute music without locating the flute sound in the flautist's body. The duration of the whole piece is approximately nine minutes, during which the flautist triggers the pedal sixty-three times. As both mediating and producing apparatus, the microphone can also be understood here as a technology of selfhood for the flautist. The exploring of flautist identities with the concepts of local and field concentrates the attention on the flute sound's embodied practices. The expanded space affects the flautist's identity through the spatiality of the flute, which brings field activity close to local. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
