in basketball, a rule that says a player must start a play or make a move within five seconds, and is not allowed to hold the ball for longer than that time:
The five-second rule is designed to help promote continuous play.
The current 5-second rule states that a player has five seconds to throw the ball before it's given to the other team.
The only problem with this play is going to be the 5-second rule.
