Two wasps, which were not found at the release site and had not reached the host patch, were not included in this distribution. The apparent dependency of the wasps on sunlight to conduct their ovipositional flights is interesting. Other workers in the vicinity of the ant being chased would often attempt to catch the wasps. During the course of research for this book, 2000 nest sites of selected solitary bees and wasps were 'evaluated and interpreted'. Second instar wasp larvae, which varied from 1.4 to 1.6 mm in length, were much less specialized than the first instar. Finally, understanding the mechanisms of naturally occurring, specific resistances against parasitoid wasps, widely used in biological control, is of high agronomic interest. The holes were the signs of emergence of the parasitic wasp adults. Mated female wasps were collected three to four days after emergence for use in the observations. The host larvae were then reared to pupation and kept at the test temperature until emergence of adult wasps. The wasps rarely appeared before the sun reached the ant nest and would retreat when clouds blocked the sun or the nest was shaded. Further study is needed to determine whether wasp infestation influences pathogen infection in ticks. Distances in the other two ecological wasp groups did not correlate significantly with floristic distances. In each generation, 25-30 pairs of wasps, chosen randomly from 500-600 wasps of the current generation, were used to start the next generation. The total number of galls and wasps were counted per syconium. Cocoons derived from all the hosts parasitized 0 and 2 days after inoculation yielded live wasps. The two ovaries of a female wasp contained six ovarioles. These types of insectaries made it possible for us to observe the tiny wasps emerge, and also hindered their escape. Ovipositing female wasps probably locate logs infested with their hosts using volatile chemical or visual cues. The behavioural response of the vertebrate predator is in clear contrast to invertebrate predators such as ants and wasps. The adult female wasps would harass the ants at the boundary between sun and shade. Reproductive success of both partners thus depends to a substantial degree on the process of fig wasp dispersal, about which we know relatively little. Fecundity was also higher than in wasps reared in natural hosts (data not shown). These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
