Furthermore, the vowelduration patterns found in the languages with mora sharing are strikingly similar to those reported for other cases of mora sharing. This section continues with a discussion of two hypotheses proposed in the phonetic literature to account for vowelduration. Moreover, for the shorter words produced in biasing passages, preceding vowelduration preserved the phonemic contrast. The results from young adults in both studies showed that preceding vowelduration distinguished phonemic voicing in pairs like writer and rider. Both overall word duration and vowelduration were affected by semantic predictability. Voicing effect on vowelduration is not an absolute universal. Total mean measurement errors did not exceed 21 ms for word duration, 3 ms for vowelduration, and 3 ms for closure duration. Intrinsic vowelduration is exploited differently by the various dialects. Finally, and most markedly, there was a large difference in vowelduration, such that sentence-final vowels undergo significant lengthening preceding the sentential boundary. All syllables were analysed instrumentally in order to determine the vowelduration, voice onset time (if applicable), and fundamental frequency contour. Segmental prominence here is based on a scale of vowelduration as determined by vowel height. Table 2 also shows the results of vowelduration by age averaged across the two passage types. Neither preceding vowelduration nor closure duration of the \\t\\ or \\d\\ preserved the voice contrast. For this pair, then, onset of the preceding vowelduration was also the onset of word duration (see above). But it moves along a scale of intrinsic vowelduration. The differences in intrinsic vowelduration are interpreted as a sonority hierarchy with respect to high tone association. We therefore investigated vowelduration in disyllabic and trisyllabic nouns with initial stress, as well as in trisyllabic nouns with non-initial stress. However, for the nine- and twelve-year-olds, total word duration and preceding vowelduration preserved the \\t\\-\\d\\ contrast, but this interacted with semantic predictability. The outstanding features of these dialects are extended vowelduration and increased intensity in the stressed and immediately pretonic syllables.
