Although the stipend is now seen as reimbursement of expenses only, some volunteer co-ordinators still recognised such volunteerwork as cheap labour. It is worth noting in this context that respondents considered seniors capable of carrying out volunteerwork at any age, regardless of their level of physical disability. This is notwithstanding the fact that government policies dictate that volunteerwork ' should enhance, not supplant ' paid work. Our findings suggest that personal plans to become involved in public commitments and volunteerwork are a function of the level of education. These efforts to render volunteerwork visible were largely caused by pressure from community and feminist lobby groups.
