For all eight bilingual subgroups, the basic reading score greatly exceeded the basic vocabularyscore. The vocabularyscore was computed from a 595-item checklist containing words from 20 semantic categories. One possibility is that a child's vocabularyscore is a direct effect of exposure to informative uses of rare words in discourse. In all eight bilingual subgroup comparisons, the basic reading score exceeded the basic vocabularyscore (average = 18.1 points). In both cases, the lower the vocabularyscore in either language, the more likely they should be to reverse compounds in that language. In fact, a surprising 67 out of 88 subjects (76%) had at least one frequency level where they had a decreasing vocabularyscore. Exposure to informative uses of rare words is still a significant correlate of later vocabularyscore. The vocabularyscore corresponds to the sum of all words on the list that the parent reported the child produced. Watkins et al. (1996 b) found no effect of treatment of children with moderate to heavy levels of roundworm on either reading or vocabularyscore or on school attendance. Education level and vocabularyscore are the only available measures of political sophistication across time. Also, by assigning the children a dominant language depending on their higher vocabularyscore, we can look for possible effects of dominance on reversals in both languages. The profile effects indicated comparable performance of bilingual and monolingual children in basic reading tasks, but lower vocabulary scores for the bilinguals in both languages. Relationships between vocabulary scores and fast mapping performance within each language were small and did not approach statistical significance. Unfortunately, we were unable to take advantage of growth modeling techniques because vocabulary scores were collected at only two time points. The present work evaluates the proposal that low bilingual vocabulary scores are the primary source of the profile effects. Once again, there was a wide range of variation in expressive vocabulary scores. The group with higher vocabulary scores included mostly students from the highly selective university, but some students from the less selective universities as well. Productive vocabulary scores, on the other hand, reveal both comprehension ability and the ability to retrieve words while speaking. These findings demonstrate that at 2; 0 there is considerable inter-individual variability in vocabulary development, with children's total vocabulary scores ranging from 7 to 680. By correlating vocabulary scores with reversals of adjective-noun strings, we can explore whether proficiency within a language might be related to children's reversals.
