In this study, two experimenter assessments of child vocabulary competence were used : the normed score of vocabularycomprehension and the normed score of vocabulary expression. They were matched with three control groups for morphological production, expressive vocabulary, and vocabularycomprehension. As expected, we did not find infants' use of coordinated joint attention at 9 months predictive of early vocabularycomprehension. Specifically, distinct slow and fast acquisition groups emerged for both vocabularycomprehension and production. From a substantive standpoint, we were also interested to see whether the same gender differences would be observed for vocabularycomprehension and production. Individual differences in developmental trajectories of vocabularycomprehension and production were explored using two analytic approaches. The patterns of vocabularycomprehension and production of the subjects in our study were broadly similar to the pattern of normative data. Table 1 shows the correlations for vocabularycomprehension and production for the final 89-word set. The inductive approach also identified atypical patterns in the developmental relation between vocabularycomprehension and production. Furthermore, parent report of vocabularycomprehension at 12 months did not correlate with infant engagement at 12 months or with language at 30 months. Loschky found positive effects of negotiated interactions on vocabularycomprehension but not on acquisition or retention. Only 20 percent of teachers' utterances focused on language development; 95 percent of those language-related utterances was devoted to issues related to pronunciation and vocabularycomprehension. In fact, it was not possible to uncover a single statistic used by all studies for the same measure, not even for vocabularycomprehension and production. Taken together the child-directed speech composite in this study explained approximately ten additional percentage points of the variance in child vocabularycomprehension above and beyond children's earlier vocabulary abilities. Vocabularycomprehension, proficiency, and reading and writing abilities are developed as the student progresses and fluency is acquired.
