Later he might gradually appreciate its implications and change the transliteration into a free translation or a semantic transliteration. Both names are semantic transliterations, but at different levels, and the outcome has been the victory of a graceful translation over a vulgar one. The reader should overlook minor errors of incorrect transliteration and mistranslation, which do not detract from the valuable contribution of this richly documented volume. What a pity, however, that neither the glossary nor the main text follows any recognizable system of transliteration. The book could benefit from extensive editing, as there are a number of inaccurate translations and transliterations, as well as contradictory information. The book's transliteration is both bizarre and inconsistent. The transformations provide new sites for articulation that can be explained with reference to the notion of cultural overlay - a transliteration of different cultures. Take 'hysteria', for example: its transliteration xiesidili is used as an adjective, while its semantic transliteration yibing is a noun. The word jiho can be considered a model of semantic transliteration. However, the transliteration was performed rather carelessly, resulting in a mistake. The transliteration used in this paper is close to the phonetic transcription. The transliterations and translations set off in brackets are my own. The great number of typographical errors, inconsistencies of transliteration, and duplication of paragraphs are distracting. Unfortunately, the tradition of semantic transliteration was from time to time interfered with, and could not be consistently sustained. The general reader may find the transliteration system used in this book a little irksome. In an ideology that rejects both transliteration and alphabet-switching, avoidance of foreign elements thus seems to be the only viable alternative. There are inconsistencies in copyediting, including transliterations, the placements of translations of authors' pseudonyms, dates, and so on, which detract from such a thorough study. This was done either by transliteration, phonetic respelling, translation, or shortening: that is to say, initial, medial, or final clipping. The transliteration cannot be taken as a strict guide to pronunciation and depends heavily on one's knowledge and intuition of how to pronounce a word. Transliteration may also be based purely on graphic similarities between letters. Such a phonetic loanword cannot however convey the meaning, and the transliteration may even be disgraceful. We can get 'spurious' different designations from different transliterations of foreign names. Others are more obscure, their origins only hinted at in the garbled transliteration of their names.
