Figure 10 displays the cross correlograms between volatility and tradingvolume. Markets also show persistent tradingvolume as well as volatility. Figure 7 examines the connection between tradingvolume and volatility. These features are referred to jointly as copersistence between volatility and tradingvolume. Conversely, a high level of market precision will result in high volatility and high tradingvolume. Figure 4 displays the simulated time series for volatility and tradingvolume for 40 out of the 30,000 simulated strategy revision periods. Most previous theoretical studies of the joint behavior of returns and tradingvolume do not involve dynamic optimizing behavior by agents. We then examine the effect of the constraint on stock prices, tradingvolume, and the relationship between stock-price movements and output cycles. Given the decision rules, we can calculate the mean and standard deviation of stock returns and tradingvolume by simulating long series of stock prices and individual stock holdings. The average tradingvolume is also higher for the model with the endogenous short-sale constraint than that for the model with no short sales. We also find that average tradingvolume in the economy with short sales is higher than that in the economy with no short sales. This is revealed by the higher standard deviation of tradingvolume in the former than in the latter. Figure 6, which presents the autocorrelation of tradingvolume, shows that, again, there is very strong persistence for the all-horizon case and very little in the long-horizon case. Furthermore, populations with both short- and long-horizon agents increase return variability, and leave patterns in volatility and tradingvolume similar to actual financial markets. In evaluating the implications of the model, we calculate statistics on bond and stock trading volume, consumption, portfolio holdings, etc., by simulating the model for 10,000 periods. In particular, simulated time series for return volatility and tradingvolume display a copersistence similar to that found in actual financial data. They converge after a brief period to what appears in this scale as a nearly constant price, and tradingvolume goes to zero. Section 3 summarizes the empirical behavior of volatility and tradingvolume, and derives the model's implications for these quantities. However, there has been little progress on explaining volatility persistence, and virtually none on explaining the joint dynamics of volatility and tradingvolume.
