That is why the theoreticaldebate about the best possible way of interpreting the past should continue to play a central role in archaeology. He therefore makes a call for practice-orientated research, rather than theoreticaldebate. But there is almost no methodological and theoreticaldebate and these questions are not seen as fundamental for the development of the discipline. This article is an attempt to move beyond the theoreticaldebate. However, we will discuss at least some topics that, in our opinion, are of particular interest for the contemporary theoreticaldebate. This growing influence is the product of developments in both theoreticaldebate and the availability and application of new empirical data. To overcome this theoretical divide it is necessar y to revive the theoreticaldebate, based upon epistemological principles relevant to archaeology as a historical discipline. If empirical evidence is lacking, however, the question cannot be settled with just theoreticaldebate.
