We calculated the frequency of trees in a plot that were situated on a termitemound. The control samples all have a significantly greater amount of organic carbon than the termitemound samples. The ratios of termitemound to control soils also illustrate the differences in elemental concentrations between the two groups of sample material. It is particularly interesting that fungi are usually higher in control soils while filamentous bacteria are higher in the ingested termitemound soils. We propose that termitemound construction in miombo woodland contributes to sustaining populations of megaherbivores and perhaps some woody species in these areas. Careful inspection ensured that each woodland plot was not closer than 20 m to any other termitemound centre. In these studies, the investigators reported that termitemound soil specifically, not the surrounding topsoil, was always selected. The paired samples will be referred to below as 'tm' (termitemound) and 'c' (control) samples. It was shown that the alkaloid adsorption capacities of both the termitemound and control samples were comparable. In this study, particle size analysis shows that all termitemound samples contain c. 20% more clay than the surrounding soil. However, the termitemound soil has a relatively greater clay content which arises from mound building activity. After eating the termites, visual attention is switched back to the hole in the termitemound, and the stick is manually guided into the hole. The clays in termitemound soil could also function as an antacid in response to dietary imbalances. Neighbouring termitemound samples 5 and 6 share the same control sample. It is not coincidental that chimpanzees select termitemound soil for consumption even when there is no termite population resident in the mound. The control soils contained greater numbers of unicellular bacteria and fungi than termitemound soils. Detoxification is a likely benefit of geophagy, as all termitemound soils displayed superior alkaloid-binding capacities. The well-weathered minerals in the termitemound soil undoubtedly provide a great range of chemical elements to the foraging chimpanzees. The concentrations of the majority of chemical elements detected in our analyses were greater in the termitemound samples than in the control group.
