In other words, they are similar across a number of critical linguistic criteria: verbal complementation, do support, syllabic structure, and phonemic contrast (p. 233). Figure 8 displays the regional pattern of one of the conditioning factors for syllabic 0 l 0: that is, preceding consonant. Certainly they are shorter and more syllabic, but when note values are quartered they look just as elaborate rhythmically. The acquisition of word stress is well documented and researchers have drawn attention to metrical restrictions for stress patterns of bisyllabic and multi-syllabic words. The syllabic licensing of the nasal as part of a nucleus allows nasal vowels to be (randomly) distributed throughout words. One of our main goals in this work was to study the relationship between children's spellings of syllabic /r/ and their spellings of letter-name vowels. One governs how individual consonants and vowels are grouped into syllables (syllabic structures). This is turn avoids a potential anomaly whereby non-branching structure would have to be deemed unmarked in all syllabic constituents but marked in feet. They do propose a constraint that requires corresponding consonants to be in the same syllabic position, however. The usual way of representing syllabic consonants relies on their functional status : since they behave like vowels, they are found in nuclei. For both regular plurals and third person agreement, phonological ability predicted judgments on the single phoneme realizations, and not on the syllabic realization. Memory for nonwords also was excluded because one might retain them in terms of separate phonemic or syllabic series even if they are monosyllabic. Actually word breaks are allowed at certain positions that depend on syllabic and morphological structure, but this does not concern us here. Participants produced and gave perceptual judgments on 40 non-words of varying syllabic structures in noun and verb sentence frames. In the non-moraic syllabic account, this initial vowel has a syllable but lacks a mora. In addition to examining children's spellings of syllabic /r/ and letter-name vowels in isolation, we examined the relationships between the two patterns. This avoids a bad syllabic contact where a coda is followed by a more sonorous onset. It occurs postvocalically, in syllable-final position, before a consonant (as in milk) and, in some environments, as a syllabic consonant (as in drizzle). The single-sample t test was used to analyze standard phoneme decoding errors and standard syllabic structure errors. They consist of a consonant which is identical to the coda consonant of the syllabic clitic forms. This, they argued, explains why it is often asser ted that dark 0 l 0s, and especially syllabic 0 l 0 s, are really vocalic. The syllabic structure effects due to vowel length were also replicated. During the fall of first grade, children often spelled stressed syllabic /r/ as r alone, with no vowel. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
